Discover the five Essential Places to visit in the North of Fuerteventura by Bike from Corralejo
The north of Fuerteventura is a paradise of unique landscapes: volcanoes, endless beaches, golden dunes, and charming villages. Here we bring you 5 magical places to explore by pedaling from Corralejo:
- 1. Sand Dunes of Corralejo and the Grandes Playas
- 2. The Northern Volcanoes: Calderón Hondo & Bayuyo
- 3. The North Coast of Fuerteventura: Popcorn Beach & Majanicho
- 4. The Village of Lajares
- 5. El Cotillo: Fishing Village & Paradise Beaches
1. Sand Dunes of Corralejo and the Grandes Playas
The Corralejo Natural Park is the crown jewel of northern Fuerteventura. Covering 14 km² of white sand dunes and turquoise waters, this protected area offers one of the most spectacular landscapes in the Canary Islands.
On its eastern side lies the sea with the famous Grandes Playas, including Playa del Burro and Playa del Moro. To the south stands the striking Montaña Roja.
You can easily reach this natural park by bike from Corralejo. Access is only via the main road, as cycling on the dunes is prohibited. The distance varies between 5 and 10 km from Corralejo town center, depending on which part of the park you want to visit.
Since the route follows paved road, it’s suitable for almost any bike—from a road bike to an electric MTB. However, keep in mind that the way back is often against strong winds, especially between May and September, which can make the return challenging for those not used to cycling.
For road cycling enthusiasts, this route is a must-do. You can extend it by climbing up to La Oliva, passing through La Caldereta and continuing to Villaverde before returning to Corralejo. For the best experience, try one of our road bikes: the Scott Addict RC for lightweight performance and a race position, or the Scott Addict 40 for comfort and adventure.
📌 Recommendation: Road bike, MTB, or e-bike.
2. The Northern Volcanoes
Locally known as “Las Calderas,” this chain of volcanoes shaped the north of the island and the nearby islet of Lobos around 100,000 years ago. Here you’ll find two highlights: Calderón Hondo and Bayuyo Volcano.
Calderón Hondo is a perfectly shaped crater with a viewpoint offering stunning panoramas. Bayuyo Volcano, in contrast, is an open crater with dramatic walls that allow you to see almost inside it.
Both can be reached by MTB or gravel bike, electric or conventional. The route follows a wide dirt track that runs along the volcanic chain and connects Corralejo with the village of Lajares. The lunar landscape is spectacular, and in some sections you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the north coast.
From the Calderón Hondo viewpoint (accessible on foot), you’ll get incredible panoramas, especially at sunset when the light creates a magical atmosphere.
📌 Recommendation: Some elevation gain. An e-bike is best if you’re not in shape. Sunset is the ideal time to visit.
3. The North Coast
The north coast of Fuerteventura is full of points of interest. In this guide, we highlight the famous “Popcorn Beach” (Playa de las Palomitas), the fishing village of Majanicho, and its bay—perfect for surfing, kitesurfing, or wingfoiling.
The Popcorn Beach, officially Playa del Bajo de la Burra (also known as Playa del Mejillón), lies about 6 km from Corralejo. While not suitable for swimming or sunbathing due to volcanic rocks and waves, it’s famous for its popcorn-shaped rhodoliths that cover the shore. A quirky and unique spot worth a visit.
Just 5 km further is Majanicho, a tiny fishing village and one of the most authentic places in the north. Nestled in a sheltered bay with ideal conditions for water sports, it also features a small cove where you can swim at high tide.
The route runs along a wide dirt track by the sea, offering stunning views of the coastline, volcanic rock formations, and waves as you ride.
👉 If you only want to visit Popcorn Beach, a hardtail MTB like our Scott Scale 935 is enough. But if you’d like to continue to Majanicho and you’re not a regular cyclist, an e-bike like our Moustache Off 2 is the perfect choice.
📌 Recommendation: MTB or gravel, electric or conventional.
4. The Village of Lajares
Once a small goat herding village, Lajares is now one of the most desirable areas in Fuerteventura. It lies in the heart of the north, halfway between Corralejo, El Cotillo, and Majanicho, at the foot of Calderón Hondo.
Lajares is lively and charming, with delicious bakeries and cafés, restaurants serving the island’s best goat dishes, trendy surf shops, and its famous Saturday craft market.
But the best part is the route to get there. This bike ride takes you through volcanic lands along the Calderas track, past Bayuyo Volcano and near Calderón Hondo, before descending into Lajares with spectacular views of Villaverde, Montaña Escanfraga, and Volcán de la Arena.
It’s a perfect ride for an MTB rental or gravel bike. Given the climbs and descents, we recommend an e-MTB like the Moustache Wide for extra comfort and power on this type of terrain.
📌 Recommendation: MTB or gravel. A full-suspension bike improves comfort on technical sections.
5. El Cotillo
El Cotillo is a charming fishing village on the west coast, with paradisiacal beaches to the north and south, a small port, and excellent restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish by the sea.
The route from Corralejo to El Cotillo is perhaps the most famous ride in northern Fuerteventura—about 46 km long, split into two parts:
- The outward journey follows the north coast track, passing Popcorn Beach, Majanicho, Playa del Hierro, the Tostón Lighthouse, and the lagoons of El Cotillo.
- The return route crosses El Roque, passes through Lajares, and climbs near Calderón Hondo before descending back to Corralejo.
This ride is best planned as a full-day excursion. Due to the distance, terrain, and winds, the ideal bike is a full-suspension e-MTB. With 90% of the ride on dirt tracks and sometimes bumpy paths, models like the Moustache Wide or Moustache Weekend provide excellent comfort, autonomy, and stability.
📌 Recommendation: Full-suspension electric MTB.
